JEOL Announces Premlis, a New Supercapacitor

JEOL Ltd. (JEOL; Yoshiyasu Harada, President) and Advanced Capacitor Technologies, Inc.
(ACT; Toru Usami, President) have developed a new capacitor, Premlis, featuring outstanding energy density.
ACT will exhibit this capacitor at two upcoming conferences, CEATEC Japan 2006, Makuhari Messe on October 3 and the 22nd International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS-22), Pacifico Yokohama, on October 23.

Premlis is a new asymmetrical capacitor using JEOL's proprietary nano gate carbon (NGC®) for the cathode and graphite carbon for the anode. It features a higher voltage level and enhanced energy density, both of which are essential properties of capacitors.
The maximum working voltage has been increased to 4.0 V, and the effective energy density(Note 1) to 15 Wh/kg.
The durability and reliability of the capacitor cell meet the demand in the market. The capacitor also features a superior charge-discharge cycle, achieving a capacity maintenance ratio of 80%
when tested 6,000 cycles under depletion accelerating condition at 60ºC (equals 70,000 cycles at room temperature). The self discharge is 1.7% in 72 hours.

Premlis was tested for safety by KRI Corporation, an independent organization, in 4 different areas: short circuit, nail penetration, overcharge, and overheating. No explosion or fire was reported in any of the tests, assuring the safety of the capacitor.

ACT plans to distribute samples of Premlis in different sizes to users in a variety of fields for their review. These samples will be produced in the in-house prototype manufacturing facilities in operation since April 2006. ACT will also seek feedback from users in developing cells with an effective energy density of 20 Wh/kg or higher suitable for energy storage with solar photovoltaic system, fuel cells, and so on.

While working together with Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd. to produce a commercial model of EcoCache®, a symmetrical capacitor, ACT will look for a new business partner for the new capacitor, Premlis, and promote these two models, EcoCache® and Premlis.

Note 1: Effective energy density: The effective capacity of an electric double layer capacitor rated 3 V is 75% of the total capacity because the voltage used is charged and discharged in a range from 3 V to 1.5V.
